Important Factors to Remember in Layout Composition

Creative design services can often make decisions about layout composition instinctively – it’s a result of consistently viewing the world in a visual way. Oftentimes, however, some tasks leave you looking for a solution. No matter how hard you try to incorporate elements onto your site, you just can’t achieve the right look or feel. In this scenario, the best solution is to return to basics and see which one of the said elements will work best for your project.

Using a balanced symmetry in your layout is one of the most appealing things you can do. Place the design elements in the center of the page and keep the margins even on the edges. Rotating and reflective symmetry are some aspects of the theme that you can play with. For an added twist and energy, try using an asymmetric layout. You can do this by putting objects slightly off center, or by using minor elements that will bring balance back to the design.

The Golden Ratio

The 5×8 (alternatively 1 to 1.6) proportion is well documented as the most pleasing to our eyes. By using the same proportions, you can solve many design problems. Placing the key elements – such as headlines – to five-eighths of the way up a page means you’re on the right path. The same formula can be used for scaling; the10-point box text must have box headers sized at 16 point to create the rule of thirds balance.

Rule of Thirds

Like the golden proportion mentioned above, comes the rule of thirds. Use guides to divide your layout to an area with an equal 3×3 grid. Place the key element where two of the lines meet to create the place where the focus will be placed. After that, it will be simple to develop the rest of the layout around that focal point, using the lines of the guide to place other key elements.

By using repeating patterns, you can bring rhythm and calm to a busy design. Use regular spacing and elements with the same size while utilizing attention-grabbing variation to lead attention to key areas. The use of natural, flowing rhythm will lead the visitor of the page through a composition. To make the layout really work, incorporate typographic headlines, perspective based photography and illustrations.

Next to rhythm, unity will give cohesion to your layout. If your elements follow a pattern of sizes, following grids based on such dimensions, visitors to the page will perceive an illusion of structure and order. Utilize negative space in a way where margins and spaces between elements become uniform, giving the layout a sense of unity.

Balance of Positive and Negative Space

Contrast gives energy to the layout.  No matter if it’s light vs. dark, type in contrast to image, stillness interacting with motion, or color. The use of contrasting elements can bring your page to life. However, it can also be confusing if there isn’t a clear pattern in the layout. The use of contradicting elements can catch the attention of your readers, so it would be essential that you add a device that will guide them through your layout.
